3rd Singapore Chamber Music Festival: Australian Brass Quintet and B5 Brass

Wow, I just love this nights since it is the first time I watch music concert here in Singapore. Actually there are some interesting events tonight from Welcoming Tea, Comedy Drama, and the concert it self. However, It was just go this way that I finally go to this concert which I think is the best choice I made. So, there we go, we went to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

Honestly it was my first time watching this brass performances and what I could think is that it was totally awesome. When you usually found people playing piano, violin, flute or probably cello, this brass instrument could give you another alternative.

Simply brass instrument refers to those wind instruments made from brass. In this concert, which I thought made it special, we could see the performance of the visiting artist known as Australian Brass Quintet which consists of David Elton and Tristam Williams playing trumpet, Ben Jacks playing horn, Michael Bertoncello in Trombone, and Shannon Pittawa in bass trombone. They were all foremost brass musician in the contry who has taught and performed all over the world.

In the first session, that quintet played classical composistion ranging from Lutoslawski, Schumann, David Standhope and Jan Bach. However, in the last session, they moved to 1980s composition which was such a dance suite, like Dancisca, Waltz, Bi-Tango, Two-Step and MTV. All those composition were just played perfectly. I was just amazed by their ability keeping their breath such a long time, playing the instrument(the trombone) smoothly, and I was just amazed by the horn, the first time I saw it performed, and of course the Tuba (thinking how big it is and how dificult playing it). The Trumpet was also awesome since the musician played it well. They were all so professional.

In this concert, we also had he opportunity to watch the performance of the B5 Brass, Singapore brass musician who are all the alumni of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Many of them are Thais and one of them is my friend’s friend that invited us to come. They played Mendelssohn composition which I thought awesome. However, since they played after the Australian Brass, we could see clearly some of the differences. However, we couldn’t compare both of them.

Watching this concert was just great, especially when we came with the thai friends who were so nice. We also met some Thai boys who is studying music in the conservatory. They are great since they done well in their field and of course we talk about it a lot. Haha. Afterall, i love this night =)
